Golf Swing Insights from Brian Manzella

Brian Manzella has been named Golf Digest’s Top 50 and Golf Magazine Top 100 Teacher in America for several consecutive years.

We appreciate Brian’s ability to translate complicated insights about golf swing mechanics into actionable, easy-to-understand tips and drills.

Quick Questions Answered by Brian Manzella

What are your greatest strengths as a coach?

When I attempt to teach someone something – anything – I don’t give up on trying to figure out a way to get the job done. I don’t care how long it takes, or if I literally have to get muddy or silly doing it. To me, figuring out a solution is mentally the most fun part of my job.

I’ve also been relentless in my pursuit of knowledge of how the swing really works, trying to upgrade my own game and moving up in the profession. I think folks sense my passion for what I do and it rubs off.

What is your best golf-related achievement?

Playing wise, I shot 59 twice on a par 68 course in New Orleans that closed a few years ago, so my only course record is safe.

Teaching wise, getting to the mid-20s on the Golf Digest Top 50 Best Teacher list, which I’ve made for 10 years straight and making the Golf Magazine Top 100 for 12 years in a row, were both very hard to do, but worth the blood, sweat, and tears it took.

Obviously, my students winning on multiple tours, in NCAA events and other big tournaments is pretty cool too.

Why did you start using HackMotion?

As soon as I heard of it, I was all in. It was a dream of mine that someone would invent a product like this so I could prove to folks that what I was saying about the swing was correct. It’s been super cool to learn a ton of other things I didn’t know as well!

How does your typical HackMotion lesson look like?

Lots of folks have wrist issues, and I can fix a good number of them easily. But if it is not so easy, my HackMotion comes to my rescue. Nobody argues with this device. They accept the truth it delivers. We look at whatever graph or tile think is pertinent and we go to work.

For example, I like the lead wrist to make its maximum move towards flexion on the backswing around halfway back.

I show them, pose them, do whatever I think is best to explain and get them to be able to pose it and then turn them and the sensor loose.

They see whether they have or have not done it or have done it in the wrong spot. Speeds up the process threefold at least.

What is your favorite HackMotion feature?

The audio feedback I call “the voice of angles”. Everyone wants the angels to sing at the right time. The instantaneous audible response from the HackMotion sensor is way more precise and quick than I am, even on a good day.

What type of player benefits the most from using HackMotion?

Two types: the real novice or hacker/slicer who have never had a flat lead wrist at any point in the swing in their life and the good player with a subtle issue that video and a goofy, loud mouth Italian-American can’t convince alone.

Brian Manzella Explains Wrist Angle Data

One of our all-time favorite Brian Manzella’s videos is the introduction to wrist angle data at the key golf swing positions.

In this video (9 min), Brian explains the core concepts of wrist mechanics and connects Hackmotion data to visual captures of the swing, making the learning process for viewers seamless.

From a Slice to Flat Left Wrist

In the following video, Brian demonstrates a typical slicers shot caused by an open clubface throughout the backswing and downswing. Brian explains it was caused by excessive left wrist extension and demonstrates how it looks in HackMotion data.

Watch the video (12 min) and learn how to fix it and get a flat left wrist at the top using live data and audio biofeedback.
