How to Have a Better Clubface Control (Videos by The Art of Simple Golf)

Clubface direction is critical. As a golfer, regardless of skill level, you must understand what a clubface can do, but also what you can do to control it and get yourself set up for success.

In these two videos from The Art of Simple Golf, we will learn what it takes to control the face, how you can improve your clubface angle at impact, and the direct impact it will have on your golf game.

Key Takeaways

  • The clubface position at the top can be both open or closed; however, the more open or closed it is, the more work that has to be done to get the club back to a square position.
  • Golfers should be able to hit shots with their clubface closed or open and feel what it’s like to manipulate the face.
  • Recognizing that the lead hand has to control the clubface will help with issues regarding grip pressure and the role of the trail hand.
  • Most golfers are overusing their trail hand at impact to save a clubface that is not square; learning to let the lead hand control is a tremendous benefit.

“Did you know that 75 to 90 percent of shot direction depends on what the clubface is doing at impact.”

Two Drills for Improving Clubface Angle at Impact

In watching these videos, two very important drills stand out to help any golfer trying to hit straighter golf shots.

1. Lead Hand Drill

For this drill, you will put your lead hand on the golf club in the normal position. Then, put your trail hand on the club but only as a guide. Essentially your hand will stay flat with the palm facing your target, and it will help you push down a little on the club on the downswing.

The key here is that you won’t be able to use the right hand to manipulate the face, so the left hand will have to do the majority of the work.

Take half to ¾ type golf swings when doing this drill. You are bound to notice the difference in the way you can compress the ball when working like this.

2. Manipulate the Clubface During Practice

Another unique drill, or way to practice that the Art of Simple Golf presented, is a drill that encourages a better feel and a deeper understanding of what it takes to hit the ball left, right, or straight.

Start by hitting some shots that are straight, about ten in a row.

Then work on hitting ten shots that go right to left, don’t make any other changes in your swing; simply work on closing the clubface a bit at impact.

Finally, finish with ten shots that go left to right, and again only make adjustments that allow the clubface to sit a little open at impact.

At first, you may find that all your shots go the same way. This is because you have not yet learned how to control the club.

Over time, and by taking smaller swings, you will start to feel what it takes to hit a golf ball in a different direction based on the clubface angle alone.

We love this drill for amateur players trying to learn to succeed on the course without the help of an instructor. If you start hooking your shots all of a sudden, and you know this drill, you should be able to work your way out of it.

How Can HackMotion Help?

HackMotion offers real-time feedback showing what your wrists and hands are doing during your golf swing.

As a golfer wearing the HackMotion device, it’s very easy to see where your clubface angle is at the top of the backswing as well as at impact.

Most players who struggle with inconsistency in their games due to wrist and hand issues will find their wrists too extended at the top of the swing. The extra extension makes it difficult to square the face at impact.

Using a variety of drills, and the biofeedback from HackMotion, your wrists can be set within a range that continually leads you to a square face at impact.

Final Thoughts

If you have any inconsistency in your golf game, it could very well be related to the clubface angle and the control of your wrists and hands.

It’s important to find the right tools in your golf game to improve these wrist positions and become a better player.
