Getting The Perfect Golf Grip (Video by Coach Lockey)

The grip is the first thing you learn in the golf game, but it’s often the thing that gets most neglected by amateur golfers.

To get the perfect golf grip, you have to pay attention to the impact that grip has on the rest of your swing.

In this video, Coach Lockey walks us through the different grip options and how we can adjust these options with our wrist angle.

Grip Positions

There are three basic grips: the weak grip, the strong grip, and the neutral grip.

Weak Grip – Slice

A weak grip, one in which your left hand is turned more towards the left of the center, allowing your right hand to come over the top of the golf club, can lead to a slice. With a weak grip, you have a little less control over the clubhead, and it’s often hard to feel and time the proper release.

Strong Grip – Hook

The strong grip is one where your left hand is turned more towards the right of center, allowing your right hand to be a little more on the underside of the golf club. This type of golf grip can lead to a hook.

Neutral Grip

Two knuckles from the left hand are visible in the neutral grip, and your hands run more down the center of the golf club. A neutral grip makes it easiest to hit straight shots and to find a consistent wrist position.

Wrist Angles and the Grip

If you have a hard time changing your hands and the position they are in, you can use your wrist angles to help you square up the clubface.

Weak Grip – More Bow in the Wrist in the Swing

Dustin Johnson is a golfer with a lot of bow or flexion in his lead wrist at the top of the swing. If you have a weak grip, you can match the top of your backswing with this more bowed position and create what should lead to a neutral clubface angle at impact.

Strong Grip – More Extension in the Wrist in the Swing

If you have a very strong grip, you may need to add a little extension to the lead wrist in order to balance out the angle of the clubface. A strong grip leaves you with a slightly closed clubface, and the wrist extension helps to match up the clubface angle and the wrist angle.

Match Your Grip to Your Wrist Angle

The bottom line here is that if you have a strong or weak grip, you can combat some of the errant shots by matching your grip to your wrist angle. The goal is always to try and get to a neutral grip if possible; for some golfers, this is just not a possibility.

Use HackMotion to help you match your wrist angle to your grip strength and positioning.

How to Use HackMotion to Get the Perfect Golf Grip

HackMotion can be worn to collect data about your wrist action in your golf swing. By using the HackMotion swing analyzer, you can get valuable insight into the positioning of your wrist throughout the golf swing.

Learn what a more extended or more flexed clubface feels like by wearing the HackMotion and analyzing the results of a practice session.

Another great way to use the HackMotion to work on your grip is to check on the consistency of your grip position. Make sure your wrist starts with relatively the same amount of extension or flexion each time you address the ball.

Final Thoughts

If there was a perfect grip in golf, every PGA Tour professional would hold the club the same way. The key is not to find the perfect grip. It’s to find a grip that allows you to return the clubface to a square position each and every time.

Wear your HackMotion to your next practice session to perfect your golf grip.
